Brief description of the main scopes: 

Studying the dynamics and interactions of aquatic photoautotrophic and heterotrophic microorganisms. Determining the influence of underwater light climate on the phototrophic community in shallow lakes.
Picophytoplankton taxonomy and ecology. Unravelling the effect of environmental parameters on the presence, role and seasonal succession of picophytoplankton in shallow lakes (Lake Balaton, Lake Fertő/Neusiedlersee, shallow Hungarian soda ponds). Isolation and molecular identification of picoalgal strains. Physiological study (e.g. light- and temperature dependence) of the isolates.
